I also strongly believe that even beginner students as early as 4 can learn scales and chords even though many teachers don't introduce such things until they reach an older age and have more experience. My style involves exploring music together, understanding the thought process behind different pieces of music and applying concepts in fun innovative ways. If teaching the 'cello, I like to use the instruction book that I learned from which is Samuel Applebaum's Beginning Strings book and around this I will introduce more international music, often in duet form to help with intonation. After the student develops good basic technique, then sonatas and concerti are gradually introduced. If teaching the piano, then I make sure that Dozen a Day for the beginners is incorporated with any of the beginning/intermediate books such as John Thompson's, Edna Mae Burnam's or Frances Clark's methods and for more advanced piano students the Hanon exercises are included along with the standard Classical repertoire. For my younger learners I use elements of the Orff and Suzuki Technique, balanced with a play-based approach. The main feedback I get from parents is kids forward to my lessons because I do lots of games, use a light approach, and are always very encouraging. The most important aspect is keeping kids motivated. I believe reading music important, but only one part of playing music. We learn to speak before we learn to read, and I believe in encouraging kids to listen, improvise, and explore the keyboard. Read More
