I have taught quite literally all ages. 5-75. Styles and lesson books used varied depending upon student and school. I usually taught Suzuki for violin, viola and classical guitar (tend to prefer Scott Tennant Pumping Nylon book for classical guitar though). And usually Faber Piano Adventures for young piano students. Eventually going to Clementi Sonatinas and Chopin Preludes. Also Mel Bay Modern Guitar for beginning rock/jazz guitarists. Most students were sometimes getting good but sometimes they have a hard time playing with difficult notes that I teach. Some students were getting good on the beginning methods and understanding what the music book is going to read and learn about. I encourage the students to practice the beginning methods seriously for about 30 minutes. If the student is getting a little hard, she can take a break for 10 minutes and go back to the homework. My teaching style is more relaxed and less strict than other teachers, especially for beginner students, though I do emphasize the importance of consistent practice and listening. I believe that not only practicing, but also listening to what you are practicing, especially, pieces is very important for the development of the musical ear. When teaching, I like to have the student practice and play many examples from the book that is being used, especially if they are short examples. Read More

I start by setting realistic goals for each lesson, but I will not rush past something just to be able to finish the lesson plan I had written out for the day. The core fundamentals of violin are so important and believe that everything deserves adequate attention. Quality over quantity. I believe in giving student specific compliments, but children can tell when you are not being genuine, so I make sure to be thoughtful when giving them. Read More
