My approach depends completely upon the genre and goals of my students and their skill level. For beginners, I must always take a lesson to explain exactly what each part of the instrument is and how it works. For rock and pop students, the very first thing I will teach them are open chords and the pentatonic scale, and maybe even a simple song depending upon the student. All beginner students start with an Essential Elements series of books to help them understand the process of actually playing their instrument. My teaching experience goes back to when I started my undergraduate studies at Cal Lutheran. I began taking on students from my high school simply as a way to give back and help students with upcoming auditions. I made it a point to develop a consistent practice regimen consisting of warm-ups, fundamentals, and solo work. I am using Walter Giseking-Karl Leimer methods. The first text book is "The School of Piano playing" by prof. Nikolaev (American edition),which means starting to read simultaneously treble and bass clefs, scales, etudes by Cherni, "Childrens Albums" by Schumann, Tchaikovsky, Inventions by J.S.Bach etc. It is the solid academical approach. Also from the first lessons me and student will play in 4 hands, and student will learn how to accompany and improvise from very first lessons, which is the favorite part of lessons for all my students! My methods vary by age group and skill level. I generally use Hal Leonard's Essential Elements for students new to the clarinet then progress to Baermann Scale Studies as well as several different methods depending on the student's ability. In addition to etudes, solo repertoire is introduced, also based on the student's ability. Outside of playing the instrument, my lessons include reed fixing and balancing, practice techniques, performance anxiety reduction techniques, and for more advanced students, audition techniques.
