ABOUT
Degrees / Training / Special Info:

Bachelor Degree: University of Delaware, Teaching Certificate: Cabrini College

Overview:

I'm an engaging and energetic musician/teacher that thrives in helping my students discover their passion for music. After graduating from the University of Delaware with a Bachelor of Arts (concentration in Creative Writing and Jazz Studies) in 2005, I have spent the past 17 years helping hundreds of private students of all ages, ability levels, backgrounds, and styles discover their musical voice on their chosen instrument. As an active performing musician, I've played in a variety of bands/contexts in my local community, helping to support, create, and grow the local music scene, while encouraging my students to perform while providing them advice on how to best do so. I can't wait to learn more about how I can help you on your musical journey.

EXPERIENCE

Working for a local drum teacher in 2005, I started teaching private music lessons in students' homes. From there, I took up residence at a local music store where I taught guitar, ukulele, bass, harmonica, songwriting, and music theory for the next fifteen years. During the pandemic, I added teaching virtually to my repertoire and have fallen in love with it. Personally, I started playing music because I loved exploring and learning more about the music I I was already listening to--and I desperately wanted to learn how I could create my own sounds. I try to bring this to each of my students by customizing our lessons to their unique interests and learning styles.

METHODS USED

Because I teach a variety of instruments and styles, each of my lessons is completely customized to each student. While progressing towards a Masters of Education degree, I learned the absolute importance of addressing different learning styles, and working one-on-one with music students gives me the perfect chance to do just that. I develop materials that best address each students style, and prefer to explore music that each particular student personally loves. The passion I had for the music I wanted to learn is what drove me to practice and become a great/trained musician--and I foster this same approach with each of my students. Playing music has been one of the most exciting, fulfilling, and fun activities I've found in this life, and I aim to share this with every single person I teach.

LESSON STYLE

One of my main goals as a teacher is to get to know my student, how they best learn, and what it is they love about music. My own love for music and particular bands/genres is what gave me the drive to keep practicing, and I bring this same approach to each of my lessons. Nothing makes me more happy than to see one of my students getting excited about something they are playing--and because of this, I structure my lessons to maximize the aspects of music each student enjoys, while making sure to incorporate fundamental aspects of technique and music theory regardless of the particular music we are studying.

I have been taking guitar with Andy since 2019, and I feel so grateful to have him as my teacher! From the very beginning, Andy has curated each of our lessons to match my speed and individual needs. His teaching manner is quite refreshing, as he is nothing but supportive and willing to work until I feel comfortable with my playing. He is very knowledgeable in all musical things including theory, writing, listening, and playing of course! I am currently a college student with a very sporadic schedule, and I cannot stress enough how flexible and understanding Andy has been throughout. He is one of the most patient, intelligent, kind, and passionate people I’ve ever met. If you are looking for a talented guitar player with an open mind and a big heart, Andy is your guy! Recommending him is truly a no brainer.

Andy is an awesome guitar instructor. He is extremely patient, knowledgeable, receptive, and encouraging. He worked with me to figure out where I am in my guitar journey and formulated a plan to strengthen my repertoire. In the three months I have been under his wing I have seen steady progress. I have thoroughly enjoyed my lessons with Andy. I highly recommend him!

I took lessons from Andy both in person and online. He helped me not only during the lesson, but went the extra mile to write out chords for me after our lesson. He's very patient and competent.

Andy K has been providing music lessons for our family (son and daughter) for 4 years (ongoing). Andy is an absolute gem - he makes lessons fun, meets the kids where they are, and can adapt to different learning styles/personalities. He has provided lessons for various instruments including guitar, ukulele, bass and piano. He's easy to work with, reliable and an all-around good guy.

Andy has been my son's guitar teacher for the past eight years. and my daughter's piano teacher for the past two. I can't recommend him highly enough. He is a very talented musician who seems to actually be able to teach any piece of music my children have been interested in learning. He personally arranges music for their instruments and emails it to me with updates as they build on. A close second to Andy's musical talent is his rapport with his students. Andy starts every class by taking a few minutes to ask about my children's weeks. He remembers their hobbies and follows up on exciting events in their lives. Andy makes them feel comfortable and ready to learn new music. Andy feels like a part of the family at this point and has been "instrumental" in their development. He is professional, flexible, positive, talented, and kind. He makes learning music fun, and I can't recommend him enough!
