I am a recent college graduate who specializes in classical saxophone, but has experience in all genres including jazz and rock. I have taught private lessons for several years, and my students have achieved the highest honors at regional and state festivals. Recently, I performed as featured soloist with the Minot Symphony Orchestra, playing Jaques Ibert's Concertino da Camera. For all students (beginners and students with prior experience) I begin with teaching scales and arpeggios. Scales and arpeggios are the foundation of keyboard technique, and are found in all piano repertoire the student will encounter. I generally use the Macfarren Scale and Arpeggio Manual for older children/adults (those who read music) or the Scales, Chords, Arpeggios, and Cadences: First Book (Alfred) for children. If my student cannot read music I teach them scales and arpeggios without music, while teaching them how to read music from a method book. Read More

Having taught students of all ages and skill levels I create a curriculum with the student that suits their goals and the practice schedule they are able to commit too. A part of my method is working with the student to create a practice schedule and plan so they can benefit as much as possible from their practice. For all students I try to incorporate all elements of music by including appropriate amounts music history and theory into my lessons. For beginners, I tend to utilize Trevor Wye exercises, and slowly incorporate small musical pieces. Although tedious, I believe that scales and etudes make students technically and musically proficient. I therefore include them in my lessons, but ensure the students are gaining the benefit of these exercises. I like to approach lessons from a wholistic standpoint, putting an emphasis on a student's posture, breathing and attitude. Read More
