Ive been teaching saxophone and piano lessons professionally for the last 7 years, and have had students go on to play for the Utah All-State Jazz Band and have earned several scholarships. I encourage regular practicing and give weekly assignments that include rudiments, transcription projects, and listening assignments. I focus on the jazz language and how its been applied to modern genres like hip hop, funk, and RnB. My students are encouraged to enter competitions and recitals, as well as work on composing their own original material, so they can feel good about their accomplishments and stay motivated to learn. I work with each student in regard to his/her own singing goals- whether they be for therapy reasons, recreational/hobby, academic/school, or professional reasons. I customize lessons to include these goals and to work with the singer's strengths and weaknesses. Every lesson includes vocal warm-ups that are tailored to each singer's individual voice and gifts. Repertoire is aimed at satisfying and expanding these goals. I then move on to basic note recognition on paper. This allows them to be able to visually identify when notes are moving up and down and so on. Once they become more comfortable with this method, I move onto memorizing and learning new repertoire. For more advanced students, I really try to hone in on these things while also focusing deeper on their technique.
