Hello! I am a 22-year-old drummer and graduate of Belmont University's School of Music. I've been playing drums for the last 12 years all while playing local shows, touring, and teaching others how to do the same thing. I'm originally from a small town in rural southern Minnesota where I was in the marching band, jazz bands, and choirs as well as playing in a touring band with my friends. My teaching philosophy is "exploration as a road to mastery." I help students build a repertoire they can perform. This tends to be a combination of songs they know and love, and songs that I introduce them to. I introduce the elements of music theory in relation to songs. Scales, harmony, and ear training are grasped better, and enjoyed more, once a student has context. My goal is to have each student feel safe in the learning process, while still pushing them out of their comfort zone. Read More

Some of the methods and resources I draw from include the Suzuki Method, Effortless Mastery, and the philosophy of Music As A Language. For elementary school-aged students and younger who are just starting out, I will typically see if the student is familiar with, and a fan of, any classic or contemporary pop or rock music. If so, then basic chords and rudimentary music theory is where I like to start. If not, then teaching the student familiar, single-line melodies, using them to build up to basic scalar concepts and toward a more classical-oriented education is appropriate. Read More

With beginners, I focus on the fundamentals like working out of George L. Stone's 'Stick Control' and introducing rudiments while focusing on overall technique. I also work out of a book called 'A Funky Primer', which is a drum set book that has hundreds of different beat combinations. Depending on how the student progresses and what their overall goals are, I eventually begin to introduce difference genres and styles and more complex and challenging approaches to the drum set. For beginners, I will start out teaching them the fret board from one end to the other and basic chords. Once the student is up to speed on chord changing and fretboard knowledge, I will begin teaching them easy songs. With students in their mid-teens and up, I will ask them what their interests are and teach them accordingly to meet their goals.
