My methos are geared towards the specific student and what he/she wants to learn. For students who specifically want to learn fiddle or banjo, I would mostly focus on learning by ear as I believe that conveys the style in the most authentic form. For classical students, we can work from the suzuki method books, but without strictly adhering to the teaching method. I typically do a quick first lesson assessment to determine how advanced the student is and go from there. For beginning students, I usually start with recognizing note patterns. I have them listen to their favorite songs and mimic the melody back to me. This is the beginning of their basic ear training. It teaches them to be able to recognize specific melody patterns and allows them to learn songs by ear quicker in the future. Read More

In 1988 I received my associates degree in music performance from Augusta State College, and then moved out west to focus on a career in music. I love working with students of all ages! In 2018, I received my Bachelor's Degree in Music Therapy from Charleston Southern University and have been teaching ever since. I grew up traveling with my older siblings who are all musicians, and we would perform all over for concerts, weddings, social events, churches, and more. Each lesson will be solely based around the needs and wants of the student based on their age-level, experience, and goals as a musician. We will work on many different vocal exercises and warm-ups to make sure we are strengthening every part of the vocal range. Ear training and music theory exercises can be implemented as well for those students who would like to improve their overall musicianship. As for repertoire, students may bring in whatever they are interested in learning, and/or I am more than willing to choose songs that I think would be fun and challenging within the genre the student wishes to learn.
