My teaching philosophy is "exploration as a road to mastery." I help students build a repertoire they can perform. This tends to be a combination of songs they know and love, and songs that I introduce them to. I introduce the elements of music theory in relation to songs. Scales, harmony, and ear training are grasped better, and enjoyed more, once a student has context. For beginner guitar students I use Mel Bays You Can Teach Yourself guitar . I emphasize chords and technique and playing melodies. For piano students I teach students first to listen and immitate and then read. Once they master some basics in reading music I introduce chords. My vocal students start each lesson with warmups and apply the techniques to the songs that they are learning. For beginners, I typically start students off with the suzuki books to build technique, but I teach them from the classical perspective rather than the suzuki method. With intermediate and advanced students, i will introduce solo repertoire appropriate for recital performance and/or a commercial piece (fiddle tunes, pop songs, etc) that the student is interested in learning. I began teaching private lessons while in college, teaching classical, electric and acoustic guitar. For the past 5 years that I have been in Nashville I have been teaching again for the last 2. I have experience in teaching students as young as 5 and as old as 65. There is no age limit on learning! Teaching began for me in high school when I helped lead our school's all male a cappella group. I did an arrangement here and there but mostly led warm-ups and conducted most of the performances. This carried over into my college career by conducting the various choirs across campus as well as receiving a conducting scholarship.
