For beginning students whose primary goal is membership in a school performance ensemble, I will usually choose a beginning band method that give them a good foundation in fundamental playing techniques. As they gain basic skills at this level, I expand the content of lessons to include easy solo repertoire. For older and adult beginningstudents, I usually use instrumental methods more suited for older learners. In addition, I incorporate easy solo literature for public performance. Read More

I will also help a student with any outside pieces for school or the community. Piano Lessons: For beginning students who are very young, I start with Bastien Piano Basics or Hal Leonard Essential Elements. For adults/teens, I use the KJOS Bastien book for adults or the upper level books by Hal Leonard. I also have my students play popular pieces or holiday pieces of their choosing in addition to their classical repertoire. Read More

Music is a language! I teach music in a similar manner as we learn to speak. We learn to speak through trial and error having no wrong words and music should be taught in a similar fashion, where there are no wrong notes. We learn our speaking style, manner and/or accents by what we hear and this concept also applies to music; therefore listening is a crucial part for advancement and the pleasure of learning. I am warm and vulnerable, I find being open is the best way to develop my students' trust. Trust is key. It is important to me that students progress at their own pace however slow or fast that may be. I help set goals for development that are challenging but realistic. We will celebrate achieving those goals together. Nothing inspires me more than seeing the light go on inside a student as they grasp a challenging concept. Read More

My teaching experience began in high school, as I began teaching children in a group setting. I worked at a children's educational summer camp where I instructed choirs and chorus singers for Musical Theater. During my time at OCU, I taught private voice lessons to students with diverse vocal goals. I have found that the best way to teach singing is to let your students sing! While discussing technique and concepts is important, it can never replace the experience of practicing with your voice. Read More

What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
No distractions! If you want to get the most out of your practice, you need to be serious when you practice. No messing around on your phone during "Chop breaks". Stay focused and encouraged to play better all of the time!
Crave progress! It is difficult to step back and analyze our own progress sometimes. Practicing over and over without ever realizing the effects it has on your sound and performance ability, can be mentally and physically draining. Be honest with yourself and ask, "Is this better than it was last week?" "Do my parents/friends/fans hear my progress?"
THE ANSWER IS YES!! Stay motivated, focused, and determined to be the best!!
How do I know if my child is ready to start lessons?
Does your child have the physical capability to press the buttons/keys/pads?
If so, then they are ready!

Why did you choose your primary instrument?
"Because it only had 3 buttons and that meant it was easy"
Little did I know, I was verrrry wrong. Since I have realized how difficult the trumpet is, I have learned to crave that difficulty. There is nothing more satisfying and fulfilling than working so hard on developing a certain skill on the trumpet just to see it finally pay off in a performance.
In addition, trumpet is such a versatile instrument. You can play so many different genres of music and tailor your tone and sound and articulations to any genre or style and enjoy ALL of them!
What do you think is the hardest thing to master on your instrument?
RANGE! Expanding ones range on the trumpet is vital to their mastery of the instrument yet it is incredibly difficult to be able to play very high AND very low within the same piece and be able to control the instrument and those notes every step of the way. In my experience, many trumpeters are EITHER incredible lower register players or incredible higher register players. It is very rare that I meet/play with a trumpeter who has mastered the highs and the lows because it is NOT easy. It takes serious discipline and knowledge of how the instrument works.
If you have a Music Degree, what is it in (Performance, Education, Musicology, Theory, Composition, etc) and why did you choose that degree?
I majored in Music Business Management. I loved it. I love music and I want to be more involved in the industry as a businessman rather than a performer. I want to have more influence on the future of the industry and how it functions to support great music and its creators.
I am currently making the most out of my degree by helping artists connect with industry professionals such as booking agents/managers/publishers/label reps, etc...
I really enjoy the "behind the scenes" work of a business professional.
