For younger beginning student I prefer to use Essential Elements for a good foundation. For older beginners I prefer the Rubank Method. Once the basics are grasped I add in level appropriate solo music. As the students progress I move either into the Rubank Method for younger students or the Trevor Wye method for the older students. My approach varies depending on the student's skill level and chosen instrument, but for beginners I always try to get them familiarized with their instrument: teaching them the basics of reading music and how to navigate the different keys (or strings, etc.). From there I start teaching various musical concepts, the rudiments of music theory, and begin introducing them to different styles of music. When the student is advanced enough, I start having them run through my own custom designed technique and skill drills, and have them start selecting music that they would like to perform on their own. My teaching experience really started With the DC Youth Orchestra Program as a cellist. Assisting the cello teaches with summer sessions. I also assisted at NC A T State University Orchestra. I mentored student teachers with string ensemble. Currently, I am Assistant to the Minister of Music at The Greater First Baptist Church of Washington DC. There my duties vary, from preparing the choir (teaching), playing piano and pipe organ; assist with the selecting of music for morning service; staging musicial presentations. Read More
