I have been a musician for over fifteen years, and there is nothing quite as exciting to me as the opportunity to share my love of music with new people. Music has been such an important part of my life, the idea that I could contribute to someone else's passion is very important to me. I spent four proud years as a member of the Oklahoma State University Cowboy Marching Band, where I acted not only as a student myself, but also as a performer and a teacher. Read More

My approach varies depending on the student's skill level and chosen instrument, but for beginners I always try to get them familiarized with their instrument: teaching them the basics of reading music and how to navigate the different keys (or strings, etc.). From there I start teaching various musical concepts, the rudiments of music theory, and begin introducing them to different styles of music. When the student is advanced enough, I start having them run through my own custom designed technique and skill drills, and have them start selecting music that they would like to perform on their own. I have been teaching since my undergrad years starting in 2001 as adjunct faculty at Walnut Ridge Elementary School until 2004. Since then I have taught privately at students homes part time. I believe that weekly lessons are the most beneficial for a students learning and productivity. I also believe that a combination of encouragement, praise, and level appropriate music, be it classical, method books, or popular music are imperative for success in learning music and enjoying it. I like to collaborate with the studentto learn what songs theydesire to know how to playandacknowlede their achievement when they can play thesongthat they worked so hard to learn. It is rewarding to me to see a student learn a new concept and watch as they realize when that musical thought makes sense! I want every student of mine to feel comfortable asking questions when something does not make sense and I am always prepared to explain a concept in various ways so that all learning styles can understand. For young, beginning and novice students, I believe that it is important to find and instill a love of music before diving too deeply into the fundamentals. Music is a beautiful thing, but it can be overwhelmingly complex at the same time. I will only take on students who show a genuine interest in music, and from there I like to cultivate that interest. We can discover what they like about music and go from there. Read More

I believe to be successful, you have to want whatever it is you are working towards. When it comes to music, this is especially true. I love seeing people 'get' it when learning, and the joy in their eyes spills through in the form of their improved skills, attitude, and smiles. I also believe that for some, playing music can be a sort of therapy in disguise, because not only does it take the mind off the day-to-day grind, but in doing so you gain knowledge and experience with every strum. My teaching experience dates back to my college days, as I began teaching private lessons part time 15 years ago, and have been consistently teaching students in my in my studio for the last 10 years. Encouraging regular practice on a consistent schedule is one of the key points I like to emphasize for younger students, as it tends to help the student progress and gain a passion for their instrument. I've also found that a combination of classical and modern music can go a long way in helping students enjoy the piano and motivate them to practice and continue to learn as well as sing . Read More
