Instruments: Piano
For beginner students, I start with the basics and like to teach from the Hal Leonard fundamentals books, but it also depends on the type of student. Some are more visual learners whereas others might be more auditory inclined. I modify my teaching style to accommodate the student. Understandably, theory can get mundane, but I try to make learning fun and applicable so a lot of what I teach directly involves playing on the keys instead of writing things in books. Read More

I love seeing my students reach their goals (no matter how big or how small). The smile, sense of satisfaction, and confidence that I see in my students as they progress gives me a great sense of humility to be able to work with such great students week after week and many times year after year. From beginners who have never played a note in their life to advanced students who have played for years I enjoy sharing the joy of music with each of them. Read More

Piano - I find that no one method book is completely standalone, so i incorporate several method books...Piano Adventures, John Thompson's course, Piano Pronto, and some self-composed music for my youngest students! Intermediate-level pianists start choosing some of their own repertoire as well. Clarinet - For students who do well with method books, I use the Rubank Elementary & Intermediate books, and A New Tune A Day books by Ned Bennett. Read More
Instruments: Trombone
My teaching experience extends back to my high school years when I began working with fellow trombonists to help them improve their playing. More recently, I have picked up teaching again and currently work with local students in the Piedmont Triad area. As I have stated previously, my teaching method focuses heavily on fundamentals and technique, as it is my belief that having a strong foundation will provide the student with the tools necessary to have success on the instrument. Drawing upon my education and experiences as both performer and teacher, I strive to relate my musical background to my students' learning experiences and progress. As each student comes with his or her individual musical wants and interests, student lessons are designed to meet these needs of a particular student. I have young students of ages 5 to 14 as well as students of upper ages. According to a student's level of musicianship (beginner, advanced or in between), students are taught how to read music, music theory in relation to their progress, chords, scales and how to write/compose their own songs. I approach teaching with a systematic and rhythmic approach. First we want to nurture and nourish the creative and playful elements that draw one to want to learn while we incorporate the fundamentals of theory, technique, etc. into that fun and build upon a foundation that will give the practitioner the tools to communicate in and understand musical terms and will also broaden the scope of the learner's musical vision which broadens the scope of ones entire being and awareness.
