For the Clarinet, I typically use The Hendrickson Method book series with supplemental books on the side to enhance their various levels.  For flute and saxophone, I will evaluate based on the student's level. Once I have established a method book, I incorporate solos and additional techniques. My teaching style is instruction, encouragement and assignment. I will teach a concept and then encourage the student as they attempt to master the skill. I will then assign that concept and skill as homework. After the student masters that concept I will introduce another concept that builds upon the previous one. During each quarter of the year a piece of music is assigned where those concepts are necessary to perform the piece. Read More

I also want my students to enjoy the violin and look forward to their lessons each week as much as I do. If I ever sense that the student is becoming frustrated or isn’t practicing, I consider it my responsibility to get them back on track. Whether it be through extra encouragement, learning their favorite song, making a violin exercise into a game, or just changing up the routine a little, I do whatever I can to make them excited about the violin again. Teaching in a traditional style, the method books primarily used are Alfred's Prep Course, and Faber. For the very young (4-5 years old), I have had great success using Music for Little Mozarts. I encourage independent sight reading with additional books of holiday songs and fun songs. Each level includes theory and/or note speller books. For the very young, I include note spelling games. I also allow students to perform their own compositions and help them notate on staff paper to understand rhythm and theory as applied in their own creations. Read More

I have found that the witnessing a student's development of a passion for music is a very rewarding experience. For each student to freely expressive their self through their music, it is important that they are allowed to progress at their own pace. I constantly evaluate where a student is at in their growth to ensure that material is challenging, but not frustrating.
