Instruments: Trumpet
I aim to teach my students the difference between "playing the trumpet" and "making music" and how this distinction is applied to practice. "Playing the trumpet" is a physically demanding task that requires diligent, often tedious practice to become skilled at. "Making music", on the other hand, can be done by anyone at any skill level and is lots of fun. The goal of practicing the trumpet is to become so familiar with the instrument that it becomes an extension of our body and mind, as effortless and automatic to perform as breathing or walking. My experience in teaching started when I was in undergraduate school fullfilling my vocal pedagogy requirements and was instantly drawn to it. I have always been selected to be the section leader in choir or the vocal coach in my casts and it has allowed me to better understand how we learn as musicians and Ive taken that with me into my own private studio. Having just returned from 3 years performing at sea, Im looking to build my studio even more and am looking forward to bringing on new students of all ages, styles, and skill sets. Read More

As a teacher, I have taught private lessons, small and large jazz groups, concert bands, and in a classroom situation. I believe that being a part of diverse musical ensembles is essential to musical education. Many core concepts can be found in any style of music, and playing with as many people as you can find in many situations helps to make you the best possible musician you can be. Read More

My first college band, modern-ska sexted Both Heads Failed, a mix of College rhythm section and Conservatory horn section, was a regular feature at school talent shows, and did a smattering of inter-state touring. Learning a musical instrument is very challenging and for most of us it doesn't come naturally. It's unfortunate when students become frustrated too quickly in the process and decide to quit out of frustration. In my style of teaching, it's very important that students feel some level of success no matter where they are in their own musical journey. Often I will perform lesson materials in unison along with students to help them if they are feeling anxious or uncomfortable. Read More
