Instruments: Voice
In 2004 Icompleted my bachelor's degree in vocal performance with a concentration in opera from Shenandoah University (so much more engaged, excited, and subsequently successful than I was in my first college experience!). While taking a course about the anatomy and physiology of singing, I found a perfect marriage of my analytical background/skills and my passion for developing people. Intending to pursue a performance career, I unexpectedly found I loved teaching voice and a second career was born! Read More

I first began teaching music in 2006 as the trumpet instructor at Silver Creek Central School where I directed trumpet master classes for high school students.I later took on various private students teaching trumpet, guitar, electric bass, improvisation, and arrangement composition. While earning my Master of Music at the University of the Arts, I served as the trumpet department intern and was responsible for teaching private trumpet lessons, preparing transcriptions for class materials and live performances, and proctoring music theory exams. Also at UArts, I was a teaching assistant for the Freshman Jazz Improvisation class for which I conducted sectionals, administered exams, and offered critiques regarding inventiveness of improvisations. I have published my own series of method books to cover a wide range student needs. In addition, I often create materials depending on the student's interests. For more formal styles, I will use traditional methods created by Hal Leonard, Mel Bay, Frederick Noad etc.. My philosophy of teaching is that lesson materials must match the students interests and ability. Methods and materials must be carefully chosen or created to move them to the next level of playing, without frustration or boredom. Read More

I have a varied teaching background with 11 years experience teaching various subjects at a professional level. I have instructed students aged 6-70+ during this time. Subjects taught include expert level map, compass and gps courses, basic outdoor and nature courses as well as outdoor safety sections. I approach teaching music using the same principles that I apply to other subjects that I teach. I prefer a strategy of solid work ethic, experience, fundamentals, honor, flexibility, understanding, responsibility, adaptability, a dash of recklessness along with intelligence and book study. If a student has never been introduced to music, I try to take them on a creative journey. I often want to find out what is their favorite kind of music. It is all about making the student comfortable and eager. It's important to always commend the student when there's progression. I always encourage my students to learn about many different types of music; to broaden their musical ear and notice how many type of music can come together and create something epic. Read More

In each flute lesson, I typically begin with a bow as respect for myself and the student. We typically start with tonalization warmup from Suzuki Book 1. The student listens and produces the best sound they can make after listening to me. My goal as a teacher is to help them become their own teacher and evaluate the things they can improve upon. Additionally, each piece in the Suzuki Books, the piece has something to review and teaches a new concept which I really like as well. Read More

My Teaching Style might be called the Charles Rosen Approach holistic use of numerous aspects: 1. Efficient instrumental mechanics (the basis of a strong and accurate technique); 2. Causal influences both historical and theoretical, which inevitably affect each other in a constant give-and-take and which we perceive through the sieve of time after the event. 3. Proper use of the body as demonstrated in Alexander Technique, Feldenkrais, and Body-Mapping, which can be grouped together under the umbrella of Ergonomics! Read More
