I meet the student where she/he is. If a beginner, I want her to leave the lesson playing or singing a simple song with a smile. If he is advanced, I want him to leave the lesson engaged even more with the piece we are working on. I use the Faber Book Series for piano teaching and supplement it with my own collection of pieces and teaching tools. Everyone starts off at a different place, so I mold the process to fit the certain student in a way that helps them improve at their own pace. This could range from working on a particular scale to solidify thumb crossover, to working on the use of a pick on guitar. Next 10 min.: Discuss assignment for next week and choose songs that would be beneficial. Assignment usually consists of 1 technical work, 1 musical work and 1 free choice. Having said that, possibly an even more pressing skill would be to be equppied, physically and intelectually, to play along with an impromtu music session, or "jam." If, say, a former clarinet student of mine should find him or herelf in the company of a strumming acoustic guitarist, it is my hope that they will be condfident and able to contribute musically and sensibly without the need for sheet music. With beginners and especially children, I only assume that one's knowledge of the guitar is at best at a basic level. I'll begin by teaching how to hold the instrument as well as posture. Also I'll teach basic strumming patterns for the student to get familiar with the guitar. With students at an intermediate level, I'll ask how much they may already know, or what they would like to learn. Read More
