Instruments: Voice
The first half of a typical voice lesson is spent on vocal warm-ups and vocalises. These consist of scales, arpeggios, vowel unification, breath work, etc. and have been accumulated from many teachers over a variety of traditions. Vocalises are the most important part of a solid vocal technique. The second half of lessons is spent working on repertoire either brought in by the student or assigned by myself. Concepts from vocal warm ups will be applied to repertoire, and students are expected to practice on a regular basis outside of lessons. Read More

I am not only teaching, but I am also constantly learning. When I started teaching, I used a variety of beginner guitar methods and I taught as I was taught. Over time I realized that the beginner books that I had been using were not the best way to learn guitar and that the way I have been taught guitar was also not the best way to learn the instrument. My teaching experience started during my college years. I began teaching at a music school and privately in my own studio for 3 years. Motivating students with my teaching artist skills, is one of my key point to increase the passion for music in the student. In addition, consistent practicing schedule is another aspect that I insistently apply to all my students. Depending on the student's age I can either choose pieces (songs) that fits their taste, as well as introduction to body mapping. Read More

I am a strong believer in listening before you play. When it comes to younger students this can be challenging, yet also rewarding. Younger students require a lot of demonstration as far as how to hold and position your fingers. It is a lot of muscle memory, and most new students need proper technique to get them to enjoy their instrument. I find this takes patients. For more advanced students I would get into music theory, improvising/experimentation, ear training, and composition. Read More

I begin with a thorough assessment to determine a path from the student's current goals to their abilities. If for instance, a beginner wanted to be an RB guitarist, we'd select some of his or her favorite players and recordings, identify elements of interest and, in conjunction with his or her current abilities and use that to formulate practice material. I like to tie the fundamentals of technique, expression and theory to learning songs. Read More

I am fairly new to professional teaching. I've been giving very occasional, informal lessons to friends for at least 5 years now. However, I am passionate about moving forward as a teacher, and sharing my twin loves of music and learning with students at any level of ability. In my past informal lessons, I have taught left- and right-hand guitar technique; fretboard logic; scales and scale patterns; chord-voicings (and how to develop your own); harmony; melody; modal theory; and repertoire, including such songs as the jazz standard "All Of Me", and Red Hot Chili Peppers "Can't Stop". I believe the proper technique is essential in order to be a successful percussionist. We would start by how to hold the stick properly, whether it be matched grip or traditional grip. From there we would move on to how to properly hit the drum and bounce the stick. The first few lessons are usually all about technique and approach and we would mainly stay on one drum or surface, but after that we would move to the drumset or another area that interests the student.
