I began my teaching experience in the Bronx, where I created a music program in a very large public elementary school. I have no expectations of my students until they show me what they're capable of. After our first two lessons, I start to really stress the importance of practicing on their own time as well. Singing is part muscle memory and your muscles can't memorize what they aren't consistently doing! I use a very kinesthetic approach to my teaching in that I focus on how the entire body feels when my student is singing the correct way versus how it feels when they are singing incorrectly (unhealthily). I'm not overly harsh or judgmental but instead I try to make each lesson a true learning experience where there's no pressure and the student is free to make mistakes (even encouraged to take risk and make mistakes) in pursuit of their passion of music. Setting realistic goals is the best way to approach teaching private lessons. Being that I will only see a student, on average once a week, I tend to be honest and realistic about expectations and goals. I like set goals that are somewhat challenging but very attainable through motivation and fun.
