Im big on using a metronome for all students and for them having a binder to keep all their papers. I find that if students can get down a sense of rhythm everything than falls into place which is where the meternome comes in. For instance learning a song well get down first the groove or the flow and rhythm of the song and than we work on cleaning up mistakes to make the song more accurate. Read More

For young children, I usually choose teaching books that are more fun and give them a basic start with understanding musical symbols by performing tasks in their books. Once students begin to understand how to read and play, I start to introduce the next level of material for them. For entry level percussionists, I start on a practice pad with the basic drum rudiments (rolls, paradiddles, flams, etc.). After learning these rudiments, I will help the student identify these techniques in their favorite songs, which we will then learn to play together. After successfully performing songs in several styles, I will task the student with creating their own groove, which we can then turn into a full song.
