While teaching to read music is at the core of my approach, I also encourage my students to improvise, play popular songs by ear, and follow chord charts. I regularly offer student recitals, providing an opportunity for a group experience, peer feedback, and growth in self-confidence at the instrument. Im big on using a metronome for all students and for them having a binder to keep all their papers. I find that if students can get down a sense of rhythm everything than falls into place which is where the meternome comes in. For instance learning a song well get down first the groove or the flow and rhythm of the song and than we work on cleaning up mistakes to make the song more accurate. Read More

As aforementioned, every student is different. What inspires one particular student may not inspire another. I find it important to establish early on what motivates the student, and incorporate that into every lesson in some facet. Along with the lesson, I also make it a point to establish and encourage consistent practice routines that make practicing the instrument more rewarding and less monotonous. Establishing good practice techniques from the very beginning is essential, as they will be more likely to keep consistent with beneficial practice throughout their musical career. Read More
