Masters in Music Education from Eastern Washington University BA in music from Sul Ross University

BA in music from Sul Ross University

Attended MI in Hollywood CA

Awards:

Honors society Eastern Washington University

Overview:
I'm 44 years old and have been teaching guitar for 15 years and beginner piano for 10 years. I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in music from Sul Ross State University and attended the Encore program at Musicians Institute in Hollywood, CA. I then continued my studies earning my master's in music education from Eastern Washington University. I've performed in bands throughout the West Texas Houston and through the four tiers in New York State. The styles of music I excel in are rock, metal, and classical. I'm extremely dedicated to my instrument and enjoy setting goals for my students and then watching them achieve those goals and progress.
EXPERIENCE
I began teaching guitar a little bit in high school. Then after college began teaching more and more and my experience grew. While obtaining my master's my focus was on different, unique strategies of teaching. I've taught roughly the ages from 5 up to late 60s. Many of these students I've directed in recitals as solo students or students in a group. I've also taught many guitar summer camps which emphasize playing in time as a group and which usually has a recital at the end of the camp. Additionally, I've helped many students write their own songs or solo ideas etc. I like to set goals for my students over a couple months or half a year and then accomplish those goals.
METHODS USED
Im big on using a metronome for all students and for them having a binder to keep all their papers. I find that if students can get down a sense of rhythm everything than falls into place which is where the meternome comes in. For instance learning a song well get down first the groove or the flow and rhythm of the song and than we work on cleaning up mistakes to make the song more accurate. I 'll also accompany the student on the songs or pieces which really helps them out and teaches them about timing etc. I recommend Hal Leonard books for guitar and piano.
LESSON STYLE
For a typical lesson Ill teach half basics and theory and the other half songs or anything the students interested in. I am adamant that the student's are practicing at least 30 mins a day. For guitar I strongly recommend using Hal Leonards Guitar method books even if were only working out of it for a quarter of the lesson. For piano I recommend a Hal Leonard book without question. I do pass some handouts of pieces, exercises, etc that I feel are worthy for the student. For instance for piano some of Mozart's very early works are very helpful when it comes to techinque and reading music.

I have been receiving piano lessons from John for about three years. Both in person and online . I am an older beginner and John is extremely patient with my style and progress with the piano . I am given exercises to improve my coordination and speed on the piano. We have worked on a variety of songs and John is always open to my suggestions for trying different styles of music. My progression throughout the three years has been slow but steady. This is purely a hobby for me which John understands completely.

My children started taking lessons from John about six years ago. (Mostly guitar but some piano as well) Both kids have grown to love guitar and are confident enough to give public performances. John is patient and finds ways to connect with them to keep them interested and growing their abilities. He pays attention to the style of music they want to learn and brings them fresh material to work with. He is accommodating to our sometimes crazy schedule and has been a very supportive and encouraging teacher and has even attended some of their public performances to cheer them on. We value his experience and dedication to his students, and appreciate all he’s done to show our kids the joy of making music.

My son started guitar lessons at age 5 with John. He is patient with him and understanding of his needs as a young guitar player. We have been taking lessons with John for nearly 4 years now, and my son has learned a tremendous amount about his instrument and music. Fortunately my son is very focused and a quick learner, and John is always great with pointing out things he has shown improvement on and things he may need to put more practice in to.

John is an excellent music teacher. In just a few months, he helped me learn to play Wrathchild along with several other songs and a variety of chords. One thing I really appreciated was his focus on timing and rhythm, making sure I was playing the songs correctly and developing good habits from the start. John is incredibly patient and always takes the time to explain things clearly. He’s also a genuinely great guy with a good sense of humor, which makes lessons enjoyable and relaxed. I always felt encouraged and supported as I learned. I would highly recommend John to anyone looking to improve their guitar skills, whether you’re a complete beginner or looking to take your playing to the next level.
