My philosophy is a student-first philosophy. I like to cultivate a curriculum around what my student is interested in learning about, whether that be music theory, improvisation, crafting chord progressions and solos, or learning specific songs. I come from a pop/jazz background, and love to work with students on learning songs they loveit keeps the lessons both engaging and educational. Students who are interested in pursuing music in some capacity, or those who wish to improve their chops: I am the teacher for you! Read More

For a typical lesson Ill teach half basics and theory and the other half songs or anything the students interested in. I am adamant that the student's are practicing at least 30 mins a day. For guitar I strongly recommend using Hal Leonards Guitar method books even if were only working out of it for a quarter of the lesson. For piano I recommend a Hal Leonard book without question. I do pass some handouts of pieces, exercises, etc that I feel are worthy for the student. Read More

While teaching to read music is at the core of my approach, I also encourage my students to improvise, play popular songs by ear, and follow chord charts. I regularly offer student recitals, providing an opportunity for a group experience, peer feedback, and growth in self-confidence at the instrument. My lessons are fun, and I like to mix things up by giving my students both serious and fun pieces to work on. Read More

The advancement of Kimberlys soulful style is the result of a lifetime of musical influence. Growing up in a talented musical family meant that she was always surrounded by many styles of music. Her mother is a part-time Gospel pianist and/director and her father is a part-time Gospel/RB bassist. Being exposed by both parents to a wealth of music as a child influenced her music development. Her first endeavor into learning an instrument herself came when she started to sing at the age of 5 and to play the piano when she was 6 years old. Read More

I have certain methods that are useful from beginners to advanced students. I always meet a student where they are at and then guide them to gain the skills that they require for the goals they want to achieve. I don't subscribe to the notion that one MUST read music to play music - that is not how most of the world works, but I am a large advocate of being literate. Read More
