Instruments: Flute Piccolo Music
The main objective that I personally strive for is to ensure that my students are properly recognized for their hard work. I've seen many instances when kids will stop participating in extracurricular activities due to lack of positive support from those they would expect it from. I believe that validation, especially from the parents, truly helps students maintain an interest in music. It helps them develop a personal drive to succeed not only in music, but in life. Read More
Instruments: Flute Piccolo
I like to start beginning students with the Rubank Elementary series of books. Along with the Rubank books, I like to also focus on music being covered in school, if applicable. For more advanced students, I focus on the mastery of scales, technique, intonation, and sound production. I like to use the Andersen etude series, but this will vary from student to student. With adult students, the material covered is completely individual. Read More
Instruments: Violin
My teaching style works with many different personalities and ages. What I found is that it works best with parents and students who are committed and disciplined in their violin practice at home. It is important for all three of us to realize the commitment we are making when we start our lessons together. Our relationships will thrive with open communication and hard work from each of us. I enjoy getting to know each student's learning style and encouraging them to achieve excellence. Read More
Instruments: Trumpet Trombone Euphonium French Horn Tuba
I teach my students to be self sufficient and to problem solve by themselves. By doing this it allows the student to make logical decisions and corrections in their own practice so they can establish routines of their own. I want all students to be able to evaluate their own performances so they can use their own individual practice time efficiently. I love seeing students find a musical solution to a problem on their own because it means that I’ve taught them to use their own knowledge for their own good. Read More
Instruments: Saxophone Clarinet
I tend to start beginning students with the Hal Leonard Essential Elements books, but if I find that the student either has previous experience or else progresses much faster than normal, I will move them to the Rubank Blue Book instead. Fundamentals are a critical element for learning any new instrument, and that includes playing scales. When I am first beginning, I will work a student through the scales until they have played them through correctly. Read More
Instruments: Guitar Voice Harmonica
As the son of two teachers, I've seen first-hand how important great teaching can be in a young student's life. My first formal teaching experience came while working at Camp Laney--a summer camp for boys--during college. While there, I had the pleasure of working with students of varying ages and experience levels in guitar, voice, and even songwriting. I've also been a guest lecturer at Lausanne Collegiate School's occasional creative workshops. Read More
Instruments: Piano Keyboard
Greetings future student! I have composed, performed, taught, and produced music for 25 years now. One way I continue to experience the joy of music is by passing along what I have learned. I am currently the Pianist for Saint Michael Catholic Church and have extensive experience in many facets of music and the challenges we face - both in performance and development of musicianship as well as understanding. I don't live vicariously through my students. Read More
Instruments: Bass Guitar
What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
It helps with structure when you want to learn the bass guitar. Practice time is very important. Practicing effectively is even more important. Effectively practicing helps with finger coordinationp. You will be able to sit down and say, “I want to learn about blues for a month.” After you get down finger warm-ups then you get into a few transcriptions you want to know about. You write them out. Then spend a few hours on just listening to the blues songs. This is practicing effectively. Get down warm-ups every practice session then get into a genre and master it!
How do I know if my child is ready to start lessons?
Once your child talks about the instrument all the time, it is time for them to get music lessons. The lessons will be important and your children with thank you. I say this because even though YouTube is amazing and you can learn from there, a teacher in real-time is better. The student can develop a bond with the student and share personal ideas on learning the instrument. A child should never be given am instrument just to leave it to themselves to learn it. They will never learn it the way that it is intended to be learned. The child would thank and appreciate the parent for getting them an instructor.
When will I start to see results?
The time period where the student and parent will begin to see result will vary. It will completely depend on if the child retains information from the lessons. If the child can successfully retain the information from each lesson, learn the material given in his/her personal time than no later than a month will be the time frame wher results will be seen. If the student does not understand the information and I have to go over it more and more than 6 weeks will be the time framer where results will be seen.
Why did you choose your primary instrument?
Growing up, I always had an eye for the bass. I really liked to hear how the instrument sounded on the radio. It always fascinated me by the look and the sound. It was so unique to me that a string instrument only had four strings and the neck was so long. From then on I began to think about it and what I would do if I had one in my possession. I enjoyed how it can have various strings and tunings and layouts. I knew that I was sold. So from that point on I began to picking the instrument out of a whole band. I was so happy to begin playing and learning that I never looked back.
