I have enjoyed performing in operas, recitals, concerts, and church programs for almost 25 years and teaching voice for almost 20 years. For children, my foundational methods include Leonard, Krueger, Clarke, Arban, Reinhardt, Rizzetto, Pearson, and Rubank. Solo and ensemble repertoire is introduced at the appropriate time. Time is also spent on improvisation, writing original compositions, and learning music that the students have brought to the lesson. For adults, we focus on what students are interested in working on, regardless of their ability level. My teaching style is based on the student's skill level. I teach at your pace! Not only do I teach at the student's pace, I have each student construct their own goal calendar to keep in my records as well as the student's home. I like to call it a "music vision board" because to me there are no numerical deadlines on a student's musical progress. I like to find out what inspires a student in order to better my teaching. I started out playing cornet in elementary school, switching to Baritone horn in middle school and switching to tuba in the high school band. I also began playing bass guitar in those high school days in the late '60s and early '70s. Playing in rock bands, I decided to Study music at Norfolk State and Old Dominion University, after high school, wanting to learning more about music. I began playing professionally with the Norfolk Symphony, played in the pit band for touring Broadway shows, and subsequently hit the road as a touring musician with popular regional dance bands. The first opportunity I had to teach someone trumpet was during my junior year of high school. There was a freshman saxophone player who decided to switch to trumpet, so my band director had me teach her. I teach Classically trained Violin, viola, and piano. I am equally comfortable teaching very beginners as well as high school and adult students. I am very honest in my feedback. I like to stick to the former. I strongly believe that a good, strong foundation leads to fewer problems in the future and makes the process of music-making much more enjoyable. My main goal is to help raise individuals, who are critical thinkers, who are passionate about what they do, and who will take their love of music into the adulthood whether playing it professionally or as an amateur.
