For beginner students I like to start away from books and notation and work on sound production and call and response. This is a way to get the ear working and to have some fun with potentially the most daunting part of learning an instrument. Once we have mastered that we move to writen notation and try to match what we have been doing without the book. When a student has progressed towards a good understanding of music notation I will encourage solo repertoire and other projects that are of interest of the students based upon a common goal we have set for our time together. She has competed on behalf of her former music studio, as well as state wide competitions in her home state Missouri. A book that I use for lip slurs is the Irons book, this book contains extensive exercises for lip flexibility. I also use a lot of exercises that I either learned from other trumpet players, or ones that I made up on my own to target specific things.
