My teaching methods are individually tailored to the student's needs and abilities. For young students and/or for those with less voice experience, I like to combine the basics of singing along with musicianship skills to set the student up for success, incorporating lots of fun to keep the young students interested in practice and lessons. For more experienced students, I like to start with warmups and exercises that are designed to set the student up for success in repertoire, and then finish the lesson working through repertoire specifically working through challenging areas of each piece and finding an emotional connection to each piece once ideal technique is established. My methods vary by age group and skill level. I generally use Hal Leonard's Essential Elements for students new to the clarinet then progress to Baermann Scale Studies as well as several different methods depending on the student's ability. In addition to etudes, solo repertoire is introduced, also based on the student's ability. Outside of playing the instrument, my lessons include reed fixing and balancing, practice techniques, performance anxiety reduction techniques, and for more advanced students, audition techniques. For beginning students I typically start with breathing techniques and an explanation of the anatomy of the instrument. Vocal warm ups according to the skill level will be in every lesson, as well as repertoire. I always find out what the student is interested in, and work accordingly to keep it interesting and fun. Ive been teaching piano for the last 20+ years and love opening the world of music to my students. I started learning piano at age ten and continued my music education for 10 years. I was grateful to have mostly one-on one instruction, since this really trained me to be an empathetic teacher, focused on the needs of the individual student.
