. I really desire the child to enjoy lessons. I like to build their confidence that they are achieving. I'm strict in how I teach the language of music. I don't half way teach and desire my students to be able to sight read music and understand timing. If i have a student that doesn't understand I explain in in math and they have all understood how important timing is. Students work at their pace and have some students work very fast and move quickly while others are slower. Read More

When I see a smile on someone's face in the presence of a musical accomplishment, the spiritual reward for that service is something I live for! To be able to help a student attain their goals requires a flexible teaching style, that can cater to every type of person. Positive affirmations are a key ingredient to helping a student feel good about they mile stones, but remaining realistic for the student at the same time allows them to make progress at their own pace, and feel good about it nonetheless. For children who are just starting, I use Bastien Piano Basics Primer Level-Level 2. From here, students graduate to selections primarily from Bach, Chopin and Beethoven. For adults I use Alfred's beginner adult course. I also supplement these books with several books that I have in my personal library, such as Keith's Snell's Essential Piano Repertoire. For scales I use Keith Snell's series and for technique I use Schaum's Fingerpower series. Read More

I like to first get a sense of what the student is hoping to achieve, whether it be learning how read music, having the skills to impress family and friends, or gaining advanced technical and musical skills. Then, I'll ask about the student's previous experience, learning style, and how much time they're willing to dedicate to learning piano. Afterwards, I'll come up with a plan and discuss it with the student and/or parent and go from there. Read More

Each lesson helps beginners or advanced students with unique lessons. Most student lessons last 45 minutes- and not uncommon up to an hour, and even more at no extra charge. It's a recharge that may require more than a week of practice, so schedule accordingly. My beginning music course has "handout" copies of my lessons to encourage individual students learning theory and sight reading. I use the "Michael Aaron" course for beginners, progressing with new techniques and work borks by John Thompson, covering classical, pop, rock and blues. Read More

Ms. Kate caters lesson plans to individual student's goals, passion, and abilities. Generally, the first focus is to teach students skills to read music. She believes that ability to read music is one of the most important skills student can learn from music education. Ms. Kate's goal is to guide her students so that they learn methodologies and skills so that they could be independent players beyond lessons. Ms. Kate has developed her own methods to enable students as young as 3 to learn how to play the piano. Read More

When I have a beginning student, I provide for them a basic lesson book that includes fun songs and introduction to theory. Each week I go over a song or two with the student and have them play for me the song or songs for their next week's lesson. If the student performs the piece well, they are rewarded with a sticker and can move on. For my more advanced students, I ask them what kind of music they are interested in and they play for me songs from their favorite movie or artist. Read More

Did you have a teacher that inspired you to go into music? How did they inspire you?
Probably my piano teacher, Dr. Susan Boettger. As a graduate of the Julliard school of music, she was able to precisely see in a student their potential and capabilties in a way that they haven't even realized in themselves yet. She was able to do this because of an absolute mastery in her abilties and understanding of her field to the point where she was able to push and guide someone to be at their absolute best. I think this trait rubbed off on me over time as a teacher even as I have switched instruments. All the things she told me back then that I didnt yet quite understand or see resonate with me now more strongly than ever and it shows in my enthusiasm and willingness to do whatever it takes to see my students success.
What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
PRACTICE SLOWLY. Your mind often understands things faster than your muscle memory can so it is EXTREMELY important to start things out slow and then build up speed as you get more and more comfortable. Playing along to a metronome also helps immensely in order to gauge and measure your learning efficiency as well as promote and insure proper technique. Finally, its also important in the long run to get used to playing to a metronome (or a click) especially if you plan on playing live and or get into recording and composition. Finally, ALWAYS keep in mind that learning is NOT a competition. Its a chance for you to discover new ways to keep yourself feeling motivated and inspired.
When will I start to see results?
It really depends on the person and how much dedicated time one puts into their practices. For some, it might be as fast as 2 weeks. For others, it might take about a month or two. Either way, the main important thing to remember is that how much effort goes in is usually how much that comes out. Its important for me as a teacher to gauge each student's learning capacity and give them tips into practicing more efficiently that caters to their needs and conditions.
How do I know if my child is ready to start lessons?
Whenever they express enthusiasm and or a genuine interest and desire in it consistently over a period of time. Its important to allow them to explore their curiosity and nurture it at a young age in order for them to have time to develop healthy habits and outlooks on things later on down the road. You never know, it can probably even change their lives like it has for me! Finally, it is important that your child understands the responsibility of commitment before enrolling them into lessons. As the saying goes, "you can take a horse to the river, but you can't force it to drink". Therefore, talk to them and more importantly ENCOURAGE them to keep going when it gets rough for them and see how you can get more involved in their musical journey.
