My mother influenced my life as a musician. In 1969 she encouraged me to audition for the Newark Boys Chorus. I auditioned. I was accepted and sang in choir-school for three years, singing music from Renaissance to R&B. In 1980 I received a BM and MMT from Oberlin Conservatory. At Oberlin I met three great teachers who encouraged me to sing professionally. I pursued the career! I believe that students need to be taught to teach themselves. As a teacher, my role is to guide the student toward realizations with appropriate materials and information. However, the most beneficial learning occurs when the students feels they were an active participant in the discovery(ah-ha! moments). Music lessons should be fun  - I have practical tips for practicing but the student's desire to learn will be the drive. The most important thing is to keep picking up that instrument - even if its for 5-10 minutes a day. By modeling that all teachers are still students, I create a safe and supportive environment. I like to hear what kind of music my students are listening to and incorporate that in the process, as it excites and motivates students to play the music that they love to listen to.  Read More

I have been teaching for over 40 years. In my studio, my focus is on repertoire, however I also cover ear training, theory and composition. I teach all styles of music with a focus on the classical repertoire. The theory, composition and ear training will often coincide with the style of music being studied.
