Instruments: Saxophone
A beautiful sound is the beginning of the creation of beautiful music! I find it most important to do work on a student's sound in the beginning stages of playing. To achieve the foundations of a good sound, playing pitches (beginning with A on alto) on the mouthpiece alone will develop the student's sound from the beginning as well as lay the foundations for a good embouchure. Doing this brings awareness to the students use of air by showing him/her the muscules used within and around the oral cavity in order to produce an optimal sound on the saxophone without developing bad habits that could be detrimental to a student's health. My teaching style involves a comprehensive approach topercussion that is inclusive of all styles of music. I emphasize the importance of obtaining asolidityin the fundamentals and showing the student how it willget them to where they wnat to be.I alsoaim to make the student doesn't just learn a few beats or scalesand then call it day. I encourage the student to seek an understanding ofthe music, and to knowwhy they are playing what they are playing. Read More

Psychologists and educators have developed a number of systems to help us recognize and categorize these differences. These systems aren't meant to predict everything about your students, but they're great for getting us to think about how and why different people process information differently. We can use them to help us analyze our teaching tactics, and find opportunities to make them more flexible and adaptable to individual student needs. They also help us overcome misunderstandings that arise from differences in personality. Read More

In college I studied the drum set as well as classical percussion. Read More

My teaching experiences stems back to my undergraduate career at the John J. Cali School of music. I began teaching and tutoring underclassmen in theory, piano and voice while also teaching dance classes in the community. After I graduated I continued teaching and gained an assistantship to continue voice lessons to undergraduate non-majors. I also was the assistant director for our musical theater revue. After I returned from my masters work I contued teaching as various private schools in the New Jersey area before being hired as an artist affiliate at Bucknell University in 2015. Read More

I describe my teaching style as casual in that I tend to encourage creativity along with traditional classical music teaching. Also, I avoid repetitive drill and favor teaching derivation such as intervals as the basis of all scales and chords instead of memorizing scales. I integrate chords and chard variations as appropriate with the execution of a song. To emphasize the fun part of the lesson, which is song, the student participates in the song selections as well as the type of music which is taught. Read More

For beginning piano students, I usually employ the Faber or Alfred Series books. They are intuitive and the various books (Lesson, Theory, Technique, Performance, etc) complement each other well! They also have an "older beginner" series that is great for teens and adults that are new to piano. I also encourage my students to try composition, even if it is very simple melodies. This is usually after they have established a good grasp on beginning music theory concepts. For beginning voice, we begin half with the essential signing technique as well as the beginning musical concepts such as pitch, rhythm, etc. Read More
