My teaching philosophy follows the belief that musical understanding and maturity are easier to discuss once the student is able to execute a variety of technical details. I often say that technique is teaching a student how to make ten shades of blue, but musicality is deciding which shade of blue to use. Musicality can be more subjective than technique, although there are certain guidelines for each period (Baroque, Classical, Romantic, etc.). Read More

My teaching experience is varied and puts the student's needs first. I have taught privately for the last 7 or 8 years, and can proudly say that every one of my students has learned a great deal. Providing consistent support and a positive attitude is my goal for every lesson, and I take the concerns of each student with the utmost sincerity. Having taught in both private and group environments, I have developed an ability to quickly convey important information in a way that every student will comprehend. Read More

I am a professional drummer and percussionist residing in the Pocono Mountains of Pennsylvania. I grew up in northern New Jersey and studied in New York City with well-respected educator Sam Ulano. I went on to attend Rowan University and studied percussion with Dean Witten (Frank Sinatra). During that period, I also studied vibes with Dave Samuels (Spyrogyra). I graduated with a BA in Applied Percussion & Commercial Music. I have worked up and down the East Coast, including well known venues such as the Atlantic City Showrooms and Westbury Music Fair. I feel like I have a very loose teaching style that is grounded in the fundamentals. I do not put deadlines or timelines on any student's progress, and I also realize that each student's needs are unique to each and every person. I work to give each and every student a very solid understanding of music (being able to sit at a piano or pick up a horn and play music, be able to recognize and understand the theoretical aspects of music, aurally discern chord progression and when a wrong not is played to understand why chords move they way they do and be able to easily hear your own musitakes). My methods are in service of the cultivation of interest. Mainly I want the student to focus on learning how to play the music they want to play. The key to cultivating interest is to nurture the social, communicative and fun elements of playing music; associating the laughter and exhilaration with learning. I'm a self taught musician - I know that music is intuitive enough to learn without getting overly text-book about it, and I think focusing too much on the book at an early age can turn away potential musicians. Instruments: Piano Voice
When I took piano lessons, my teacher simultaneously taught John Thompson, John Schaum, and Alfred's Basic piano courses, which was a bit overwhelming! For children in particular, I believe that John Thompson does the most effective job of working from the fundamentals up to the classics. That said, private lessons are very personal, and I'm happy to work with any student to find the repertoire that is most engaging to them. Read More
Instruments: Bass Guitar Double Bass
With my bass students, I begin with basic technique and ear training. My first goal for a student is to learn one of their favorite simple folk songs by ear, while also developing basic musical skills and instrumental technique. I believe that it is extremely important to begin developing a students aural abilities and creativity early on. I also will have the student begin to work out of the Simandl bass method book for simple exercises and introduction to reading music. Read More
