With beginner students I start by establishing good foundation through method books by Simandl and Todor Toshev which include technical exercises for both hands as well as little popular melodies to keep the student interested and develop their musicianship. With more advanced bassists I introduce exercises, etudes and methods by Franois Rabbath, Bottesini, Hrabe and others as well are pieces form the standard double bass repertoire ranging from baroque to contemporary composition. I hold a Bachelor of Arts in Music and am currently working on my masters degree in Vocal Chamber Music at the University of Redlands! For all of my students, I typically start with teaching (for more advanced students at least reviewing) the fundamentals of breathing for singing. From there I move on to phonation: how to produce a healthy sound, in coordination with and supported by the breath.
