i teach each student individually that is to say that i tailor the lessons to meet the level and desires of the student . i include teaching theory as i go along with each student. i tell each student that there is no such thing as a mistaked, there is only learning. i usually teach two songs in the first hour lesson . one in four four time and one in three four time . i also teach how to transpose any song that the student wishes to learn into the key that the student is able to sing the song in. again . nothing is hard . it is only new. One of my earliest students was a former band-mate. One of the early lessons is the importance of practice. He saw for the first time my work ethic and commitment to daily practice. I've found the best way to teach is to cater to each student's interest. While early or beginning players may require some fundamental grunt work, there is always a way to assure that it's fun too. Earlier students would need to start learning the basics: rhythm, learning to read, developing technique through scales etc. of which there are many methods. As students mature, I feel the Suzuki method for aspiring classical students is the best route (there are multiple books in this series) along with some other extensive and more challenging works.
