To sing freely one must feel safe and at liberty to try things, to make sounds which in other places are frowned upon. I aim to provide a place where students can try things and receive positive reinforcement for what works, rather than judgement about what is wrong. I believe everyone is capable of being more expressive and learning more notes, and I aim to foster that positive attitude. Read More

Encouragement is key to my teaching style. Praising a students accomplishments motivates them to higher goals. Each student has different needs. What is good for one is not good for another. I have to be flexible in my teaching. Some students love classical music others love new age. I am willing to try new music, and try to listen to the students. Technical abilities are very important of course as they set the limitations of self-expression, though many seem to overlook the deeper purposes and benefits of music. I myself love my craft. For beginning and intermediate students, I like to assign short pieces from method books such as Student Instrumental Course and Rubank. For more advanced students, I will help them explore their particular interests, introduce them to traditional repertoire, and for jazz/rock/pop students, aid them in the process of transcribing the music they love, which benefits their vocabulary as well as their ears. In developing a complete musician, I want to offer support for my students' other musical activities, as well as provide them with resources that they might not have elsewhere. Read More
