My preferred method of teaching for beginner students is my own adaptation of the Thompson method with strong emphasis on theory and technique. A study of intervalic relationships, chords and progressions combined with terminology, sight reading, ear training and form will provide the student with skills which will allow them to play any style and genre of music they desire. I like to write out lessons, but I generally start my students off using Benny Greb's "The Language of Drumming." My students ranged in age from 5 to 23, for both piano and guitar. A few years later, I began teaching general music to children aged 3 to 8 at Jersey City Montessori School. After a few months, the parents and the proprietor asked me to teach piano privately to some of the students. I was more than happy to oblige.
