I certainly teach everyone to read music if they don't already know how, but I really like to help people hear the music they want to make. It's important to move at the student's pace - whatever speed that may be. It's important to build a solid foundation but that doesn't necessarily mean mastery or perfection. It's easy to lose interest if stuck on one piece to long so we'll move through the material as quickly or as slowly as the student desires as long as the foundation is there. For beginning students, I like to start with the beginnig Suzuki books, and I incorporate many Suzuki methods into my teaching style. As an accompaniment to Suzuki, I also use Klengal's Technical Studies for the Violoncello, Vol. 1 in order to solidify a solid understanding of scales and hand positions. Once a student demonstrates appropriate dexterity, I begin to introduce solo repetoire that they would like to prepare for studio performances and any other pieces that they have an interest in playing. I love seeing my students become as passionate about music as I am! Therefore, it's important that each student progresses at his or her own pace. I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson. It's important for each student to have just the right amount of material to work on each week, so that they are progressing without feeling overwhelmed. If there's a particular method book the student and/or parent want to use, they're the boss. If not or addition to, I simply teach HOW to play the instrument. I show them how to hold it, wrist/elbow positions and muscle memory techniques which are very important early on so bad habits don't develop to where they're playing the instrument versus fighting it.
