Solo pieces added over time. Performances - even if only an in home recital for a few family members and friends - are encouraged about once a semester. I give all of my students a mixture of technical exercises, repertoire pieces, and creative assignments to keep things interesting and varied. We will spend about half of the lesson on technique and theory, and the other half on understanding, and appreciating different musical styles and how to improvise comfortably and confidently over them. I have a much heavier focus on songwriting, and composing than most teachers, and I encourage my students to be as creative as possible while giving them the tools to do so effectively and correctly. The first lesson typically is to set expectations and evaluate the students level of guitar knowledge. For beginners, we start from the beginning utilizing Aaron Shearers method book. For the intermediate player, we find music that is appropriate for their level of playing while also focusing on reading music and music theory applied to the guitar. For advanced players, we begin by reviewing music theory applied to guitar and focus on music for their level of playing. advanced players will go through the same practices as a university student studying guitar performance. I was always the percussion leader and truly loved helping out my fellow students. I started formally teaching at the age of 18, when I took on my first middle school student.
