My primary goal with all of my students is to help them make great music that is true to themselves. I also try to stick with a sound-before-symbol approach to learning music. What this means for my teaching is a focus on training both the ears and technique. I always prefer a more personalized approach to teaching, working with students to find repertoire that speaks to them and improves their musicality and technique. Read More

The structure of each lesson is always tailored to the student, but typically involves working hands-on with material, charting progress week to week, and refining the way that the student applies his or her focus while practicing passages. I often like to emphasize the use of expressive dynamics, rhythmic coordination between the two hands, and melodic phrasing. Given the open-ended nature of the musical experience, I hope to impart valuable insights into these technical aspects of performance and practice while also providing general guidance in accordance with the student's personal vision. Typically I start off gaining some insight into my students. Who do they look up to, the type of music they're into, what genres they want to improve in, etc... After gathering that information I ask them to sing a song that they enjoy or that means something to them. Based off of that I've gathered a substantial amount of information about their voice and their preferences to develop a curriculum/course outline for them. Read More

I use different method books, depending on the student's age and past experience (if any). I particularly like the Alfred methods, but I supplement this with solo books and duets. For duets, I like the Alfred Learn to Play Duets, but also the Selected Duets (Rubank) series. I think it's very important for any student to play solos with piano and once students know a few notes, there are really nice pieces they can do. Read More

I like to think of myself as a teacher that suits the student's needs. And since every one has a different way of playing an instrument, I will build a specific "curriculum" for each student. I am not a strict sort of teacher, I like to talk about what we are learning, show musical examples, play examples and generally just have a good flow in class. The most important thing is to learn that playing an instrument should be a fun, entertaining learning experience. Read More

My approach to teaching really varies depending on the students specific needs. For absolute beginners, I can tend to follow a more concrete progression, but depending on who the student is, and what they're level of passion may be for learning something specific, the lesson may be highly specific. If the student is interested, I personally like to give them an understanding of some of the theory as they go along, even if they are a beginner because I believe it helps them to see the bigger picture.
