I begin my students with the fundamentals of music and the instrument. As we expand our musical knowledge, we also broaden our understanding of technique, because I strongly believe that every musician, no matter the genre they ultimately play, needs a strong foundation of musical knowledge and technical proficiency on the instrument. All the while I take into consideration what style the student is interested in. I have been teaching for 5 years, ever since of friend of mine asked for some lessons to help him get back to singing. I loved the direct connection to this very personal aspect of peoples' lives, and I felt humbled by the trust I was given. I gained experience by doing, asking questions, and really listening to the needs of my students. My methods are customized to each student's individual needs, skills, and interests. Before each lesson a student and I will go over what their goals are. During the lesson we will discuss their strengths and weaknesses, what they can do and what they need to improve upon and practice what they've chosen to learn. For beginning students who are children, there are multiple method books I have worked with like Hal Leonard's Essential Elements or Accent on Achievement. These books are great for children to get started with the basics and work on their technical study. For adults, they could use those same methods books or the goal would be to find what the students interests are and explore different materials around that. At the end of day, music should be fun! My goal is to foster and encourage a lifelong love of music and a passion for communication. To me, that means training studentsin the styles of music that each individual feels the most connected to, and then extending their knowledge and awareness to styles that they may not have as much experience with. I believe that an in depth study of music is, in essence, the study of communication. Training people to be thoughtful communicators gives them confidence, individuality, and an invaluable set of skills that can be applied to any future interest or career path. Read More
