Instruments: Saxophone Flute Clarinet Recorder
For beginning young students I prefer the Rubank Elementary Method for saxophone, clarinet and flute, and my own (unpublished) method for recorder. For older beginners, there are many books on the market. I'll work with what the student perfers. For more advanced students there are classic works such as Klose for clarinet or saxophone, solo works for competition or performance, or just for fun. I want recorder students to learn the 2 basic sets of fingering, since ensemble playing usually requires changing instruments. Read More
Instruments: Guitar
We went over some very basic principles starting with listening and goal settings. We also learned how to play along with a rhythm and learn the names of the different notes, scales, and chords. These are foundational building blocks that I use with all my students, but the number one factor for learning an instrument is having a love for it. I remember the first time that someone showed me how to play an AC/DC song and to me it was the most amazing thing in the world. Read More
Instruments: Cello
I am a cellist, composer, and teacher currently residing in Upper Manhattan. I love performing, teaching, and creating exciting new music with all of my friends and students. I am currently pursuing my Masters of Music at the Manhattan School of Music, with an emphasis in Contemporary Performance. I am also a member of the Contemporary Music Ensemble "Tactus", which has been critically acclaimed by the New Yorker as The deepest, grandest noise of the musical season so far, and by the New York Times, "Ambitious . . . finely polished . . . spirited". Instruments: Piano Voice
Based on a child's interest and personal voice, I recommend pieces of music varying from musical theatre, 28 Italian Songs, Schirmer's Book of Solos, and Hal Leonard's Standard Literature. In our lessons, I teach students to warm up with the proper technique, and so that they may warm themselves up when practicing. We also work on sight reading and dictation to implement musical literacy. Most importantly, we discuss textual meaning and how it relates to our performance skills. Read More

I first started teaching in the summer of 2002 when a friend from church wanted his son to learn drums. His desire was for his son to play one day on the praise team. Thankfully he stuck with it and still plays for the church to this day. That moment made me realize I have a gift for teaching. Throughout college I continued to teach out of my studio and developed my skills even more when I moved back to Maryland in 2009. Read More
Instruments: Drums
I do my best at motivating students and tell them, however much time you put into the instrument will always translate into what they can get out of it. I am very laid back but also very realistic. Setting short term and long terms goals will be the key to improvement. I believe in playing with music when you are learning as well. Instead of a metronome, you can practice exercises/rudiments to a song you like. Read More
Instruments: Guitar Bass Guitar Double Bass
We will do some playing together so i can determine what you've already gotten "under your hands". Or if you're a complete beginner we'll start from the beginning. I'll find out what your musical interests and inspirations are and we will incorporate that into the overall context of learning to play music well. We'll of course work on scales and arpeggios all over the bass, in various fingerings etc, and importantly, we'll talk about WHY we're doing it! (spoiler alert: it's because all musical sound is made up of notes, and once we can confidently access them, we'll be able to play anything we can hear) No area of the bass fingerboard will be a mystery.
