In 1975 I received a scholarship to study advanced studies on the musical field. I studied with the Teachers: L. Egúrbida, J.S. Fraticelli, E. Frasson, A. Romero, and A. Díaz. In 1980 I finished my musical studies at the Conservatory of Music of San Juan, Puerto Rico and graduated MAGNA CUM LAUDE, with specialization in Musical Education and Performing Arts. I was the first native of Curacao Netherland Antilles to study classic Guitar and Musical Education in Puerto Rico. I have played as principal guitarist in renowned musical groups such as Los Ecos and The Polyglots, in several bands, and as a soloist I have given numerous recitals and concerts in the Antilles and abroad. I was selected to be part of the special group responsible for developing a plan for interviews and petitioner’s evaluation to study at the Conservatory of Music of Puerto Rico for the academic year 1980-1981.I also received a scholarship to continue more advanced studies at Aspen Music Festival and School in Aspen, Colorado. In 1980 I obtained, recommended by the Administration of the Conservatory of Puerto Rico, very high acknowledgements including THE NATIONAL DEAN'S LIST OF AMERICA and the AMERICAN BIOGRAPHICAL INSTITUTE. I worked as a Music Educator at the Social and Pedagogic Academic Institute teaching Pedagogic and Didactic Principles to while simultaneously teaching classical and popular guitar at the Curacao Netherlands Antilles Cultural Center at all levels and ages. I was the co-founder of the Curacao Guitar-Society (GISO), at present “KITARA KORSOU, N.A.”. He also was the vice-president of the PRODIM (PRO Integral Musical Development) Foundation. In the past I have recorded several records with various well-known musicians. In June, 1984 I gave a series of guitar master-classes. My autodidactic guitar method “MELODIC GUITAR” for beginners from 7 years of age and older, is the first guitar method translated from the Papiamento language into the English and Spanish languages. During 2007 and through 2008 I had a position as a guitar, bass-guitar, piano, and Music Theory Instructor at “THE LATIN MUSICIANS INSTITUE” in Puerto Rico.
I was raised in a musical family. My father, brother, and sister all played guitar. I began playing drums in school band at ten years old. At twelve I got my first drum set and began playing to CD's and stopped playing in school band. At fourteen I began playing in a band and started playing shows. In college I played drums in four different bands played shows all over the city. In college I began to play guitar and I have been playing guitar and I have been playing for eight years now. I took classical guitar lessons while getting my minor in music and I have been playing consistently ever since. I currently play drums for a local punk band and play shows at various venues.

At Musika, we recommend that adult students looking to start guitar lessons have a clear goal in mind. Whether you are a beginner looking to get started and learn the basics, or an advanced player looking to push their skills that little bit further, the experienced teachers in our network can help you to achieve those goals. It can take several months before you start to see serious progress towards your goals, as you slowly develop the techniques and skills over time. The quickest and most efficient way to achieve your guitar playing goals is to take regular lessons and practice diligently.
Students can start their lessons as young as 6 years old with a half size classical guitar (nylon strings), by playing simple songs on the top strings. Most students are able to form chords by age 7 or 8, and begin learning how to play and sing along with their favorite songs. Older students will graduate to being able to comfortably handle a full size guitar around age 10-12, which is when many students become more interested in learning rock guitar and want to get an electric model.
Our guitar students will typically learn how to hold, tune, and familiarize themselves with the components and notes of the guitar, basic playing techniques such as fretting, fingering, and strumming, and learn the various chord-types that they will need in order to play their favorite songs, such as power chords, open chords, and barre chords. Students will also get to learn music theory, and will cover aspects such as reading music, learning different scales, and how to apply these different elements together as part of a full composition. Students will learn the theory and techniques that underlie a wide range of musical genres, and will have fun developing their guitar playing during their lessons. Eventually, students will get to enjoy learning and playing along to their favorite songs!
Young students are advised to start off by learning to play on a half sized or three-quarter sized acoustic guitar. Older students may wish to start on an electric guitar, as long as they can hold the guitar comfortably and competently. There are many different student model guitars, which will set you back $150 - $200. This does not include the price for cables and an amplifier, which will be a necessary purchase for electric guitar players. Higher quality instruments are often easier to play, which provides the student a greater chance to enjoy their learning.

Darrell is A-Maz-Ing! He demands results from his students and therefore results come quickly. The time he spends teaching is intense and packed with great instruction. He is a tough teacher but offers lots of valuable instruction that is applicable for music as well as life in general. I highly recommend Darrell if you are ready for results!

Bill has been a great teacher for both my 6 yr. old and my 8 yr. old. He is always on time, keeps them engaged, and gives them just enough of a challenge for the next week. They are both beginners, but I am surprised by how much they already know after just a month or so of lessons. Both kids are practicing willingly and look forward to lesson.

Gina is very supportive and encouraging. Even though I get frustrated with my progress, she can tell that I've been practicing and reminds me of how far I've come. My 4 year old son is quite energetic. Another piano teacher tried to teach him before Peter and could not get my son to listen to him at all. That teacher told me that my son had no interest and that we needed to wait before having my son take lessons. Peter started teaching my son a few weeks later. He quickly developed a great rapport with my son. I was astounded when my son sat down and listened to Peter during the first lesson. Peter has remarkable patience and is a natural working with children. He knows when to follow the child's lead. My son is very interested in how the piano works, so Peter takes the time to teach him about this. He is able to use my son's interests (superheroes, Lego, Star Wars, etc.) to refocus him back to playing the piano. Between lessons, he brainstorms on how he can teach my son better. For example, my son was playing the notes, but not understanding rhythm, so Peter looked into it and came back the next week with a new plan which helped. My son looks forward to his lesson every week. When he hears the doorbell ring on lesson day, he exclaims, "Yay! Peter's here!"
