I am a guitar and voice teacher who believes that learning music should be a positive, transformative experience. I am also a board-certified music therapist and founder of “Music Therapy for Vets” a nonprofit organization focused on the helping Veterans dealing with PTSD and depression. I earned my Bachelor of Music at Howard University with a focus on guitar as my therapeutic instrument. I tell my students that I believe that if you really want to be a singer, musician, and entertainer if you never give up eventually you will achieve your goals. Success is measured by your own happiness, short term and long term goals. I really take a look at what the student needs to learn and what the student wants to learn because I've seen a lot of students giving up because the institution or teacher is giving to much theory and very poor practice. I try to balance those responsibilities to a point that the student will always be learning something new as long as I work on their motivation and consistency of keeping up so they can learn how to play anything they like and want. For the more advanced player, I introduce them to the "Rose 40 Etudes" book and prepare them for solo, and ensemble repertoire. The goal in every lesson is to keep it fun and engaging. I encourage all students in every level to practice regularly, and keep a notebook of their progress in lesson that they will use as a reference in their practice sessions. I have a lot of passion for voice and I want my students to progress. In my own journey, it's taken years of daily practice to see real results and change. I push my students to practice daily for at least an hour and I give specific vocalizations that will help strengthen particular weaknesses in each voice.
