From 2003-2014 I had the privilege of being a member of a local SOMD progressive acoustic rock band, Diojee. During that period we performed 86 shows, including charitable non-profit fundraisers, paid shows, and occasional private functions. Since I began my self-taught musical career in 2000 first with guitar, then with bass, I've started numerous friends and family on their own musical journeys. My previous band and I have performed in Annapolis, Solomon's Island, and various other cities, but the bulk of the performances were located in St. Read More

If I could spend the rest of my life just playing, writing, and performing, I'd want for nothing else. I believe that to share the joy of understanding and creating music with another is the greatest gift I can give them. Teaching is how I give back what I feel to be an enormous karmic debt I owe the world for allowing me the delights of acting as a vessel for music. Read More

It is great to see any individual move towards growing their abilities for self expression. Learning music can bring the best out of many facets of life, and yield a beautiful way to communicate. I see teaching as assisting someone on that path. To me a teacher should help encourage growth and be open to learning as well. Any student I have will be met with a smile and enthusiasm for their interests and goals. Read More

For beginners, I use Alfred's books. They are very easy to understand. Alfred's Book Course are the most valuable books I have ever seen. I use Alfred's: lesson book, theory book, technique book, notespeller booke, and recital book. I usually make sure to include recital book as we are going to start our first recital this year. I also make sure that we alternate between lesson and technique book every lesson. Read More

My methods of teaching are primarily based on the individual. Within the first lesson, I make an assessment of the individuals musical abilities, and document the genres of music that interests the student. I then create a curriculum based on that assessment, which includes music theory, building repertoire (including music that interests the student), and music history/literature. I also encourage the student to engage in music competitions/auditions and student recitals. Read More

I never want to pressure or overwhelm a student with too much information or expectation, because instead of the instruction being seen as a challenge, it is interpreted as an unenjoyable command, and that discourages the student from practicing to meet their goals, instead of motivating and inspiring them. What I find works best is relating lessons to popular current music, further exploring the bridge of dynamics that make up the songs that the student enjoys. Read More

I focus on 3 fundamental aspects of music education: sight-reading, music theory and ear training. I will typically use a method book like the Berklee Basic Guitar: Phase 1 and 2 or Berklee Modern Guitar Method: Volumes 1,2,and 3, for advanced students. I also use Hal Leonard and other methods that may be more appropriate for some students. My method includes extensive use of online video and tutorial resources, plus the "Play Guitar for Life" video series that I can make available for interested students. Read More
