I focus on nurturing a students natural curiosity, while helping them find the tools to pursue their own musical interests. Many of my younger students prefer to use technology to connect with music (learning how songs are recorded, and the theory behind songwriting), but I also work with more serious students to prepare for college auditions, state/regional jazz band, etc. My methods differ depending on a student's own goals, but they generally all will start with a technical exercise, an exercise designed to get the student thinking critically, and an application of the concepts we're learning. The key to my teaching style is to take my personality that has been so effective in concert and use it as a catalyst to inspired my students to gain confidence, set goals, and press on to master their instrument. For the younger students, I tell them to think of their guitar as a teddy bear and hug it like your best friend and that fingering is not your foe but your friend. Read More

I have studied with several professional, performing musicians, but most of my learning has come from books, magazines and listening. Listening is, quite simply, the best teacher you can have, provided you do it properly. I have played music since age eight, in school bands, jazz bands, blues, and rock bands. I also have written songs since age 10, and recorded numerous cd's of original music in various styles. I am currently the frontman in the Jersey Shore Blues Rock Tribute Band. Read More

My goal as a teacher is to avoid any type of dogmatic "one size fits all" curriculum. I always want to know what music the student enjoys and build my lesson plans based on their tastes. Chords can be physically challenging for beginners so I like to work with single-note melodies early on so that the student isn't quickly discouraged. Learning chords becomes the medium-term goal. As for the long-term, I will then use specific songs as examples for how music theory works in the context of their favorite bands. Read More

Since the majority of my students will earn a living outside of music, I've learned that the number one task is to make music easy to use as a life-long pasttime. My experience with young people has taught me that rather than seeing myself as a music teacher, I'm a teacher who uses music to teach about life. I love connecting musical development to other things we do and talking with students about how musical thinking and discipline affect other areas of our lives. Read More
