I believe the student witnessing their own progress develop serves a greater motivation than any empty words a teacher can say. Also what his/her goals are for the instrument and what is hoped to accomplish by us working together. This will help me realize what customized route to take since each student has different plans and goals. I am an experienced flutist and teacher currently serving the DC Metro area, and I love teaching students of all ages and skill levels, from beginners picking up the flute for the very first time to advanced students preparing for County Band auditions and beyond, to adult students interested in learning a new skill. If they are playing in band, I will use whatever their teacher starts with in band and progress from there. As an instructor, my job is to give the student every opportunity possible to discover their passion for music. The first lesson is always about providing a safe relaxed tone and finding out where that student's progress is. Not establishing an accurate assessment of their progress can be very destructive because it could cause me to come off as either too demanding or condescending.
