I normally use the Standard of Excellence method books for most of my students; however, I am open minded to adjusting to each individual student's musical needs, whether it be Jazz, Classical, or whatever style music the student is focusing on. For high schoolers and more advanced middle schoolers, I like to have them play solo flute pieces that fit with their ability level. However, I will typically move students through the method book quickly and get right into performance repertoire that is appropriate for their age and level. I began teaching when I was in High School, where I had several students of varying ages and skill levels.  I taught private lessons in their homes.  I encourage regular practice, and weekly lessons.  A mixture of method books and my own personal written lessons I have found to be the most effective teaching strategy.
