Overview:

Award winning and internationally renowned classical flutist Kaitlin H. is highly sought after as a soloist, orchestral, and chamber musician. Bold yet introspective, her melodic style reflects her love of traditional classic music and modern, 21st century styles. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, Ms. Kaitlin H. was selected to be a featured performer at the 2019 Kutztown University exchange program with the University of Macedonia in Thessaloniki, Greece on a scholarship grant. This program allowed her to study with Othonas Gkogkas, principal flutist of the Thessaloniki Orchestra. She performed a recital at the University of Macedonia consisting of solo and chamber works. Ms. Kaitlin H. has also attended and performed in masterclasses with Carol Wincenc, Paul Edmund Davies, and Dr. Andrea Loewy. Active also as a chamber musician, Ms. Kaitiln H. is a founding member of award-winning chamber duo, Les Deux Amis, with acclaimed classical guitarist, Emilio Garcia. The duo recently placed second in the Best Composer’s Series for “Best Bartok Performance” for their performance of Bartok’s Romanian Folk Dances. Ms. Kaitlin H. is currently completing her master’s degree in flute performance at The Hartt School under Janet Arms. She previously completed her undergraduate degree in flute performance with a minor in social media under Dr. Susanna Lowey and Janet Axelrod. Ms. Kaitlin H. performs regularly with the Hartt Wind Ensemble, Pit Orchestra, and the Hartt Orchestra. Ms. Kaitlin H. now works as a private music instructor at Music & Arts and is the social media assistant for The Hartt School as well as an intern for the Hartford Symphony Orchestra.

EXPERIENCE

My teaching experience began in my early years of college, as I began teaching private lessons part time two years ago, and have been consistently teaching students online and in person since then. I view music lessons as a vital part of a student's all-around education. Music is to be learned just like a language, we have to understand what we are doing in order to actually do it! My lessons are based around teaching fundamentals (technique, posture, embouchure), musicality, and good practice habits that students can use when they move on in their musical endeavors. My goal for each of my students is to leave a lesson feeling inspired, supported, and happy! I am always looking to bring on new students of all ages!

METHODS USED

As a flute teacher, I encourage my students to play with love. Finding the balance between physical technique and musicianship is something that students can struggle with. In order to master the flute, students need to be technically proficient, but to make music, students must be inspired. My students will be given the tools to be a great flutist both in my studio and later on in their careers. By focusing on fundamentals, technique, tone, and musicality, my students will be able to interpret and create music both in a practice room alone and on stage. I want flute playing to be challenging and exciting for my students. Lessons will be focused on deciphering music from all genres, decades, and composers. It is important that my students have a rounded repertoire of flute standards and excerpts. I believe that there are so many wonderful living composers that deserve their music to be heard. As a woman in the music industry, it is my job to ensure that my students have a great appreciation for music composed by all races and genders. My goal as a teacher is to be a role model and positive influence on all of my students. My students will learn that I am a human and student just like them. As musicians, we are constantly learning, changing, and growing. I want my students to feel comfortable expressing concerns, frustrations, and blocks in their musicality to me, so that we can work through these challenges. Music is an outlet for people of all ages, genders, races, and talent levels. My goal is to help students fall in love with the flute and music as a whole and find their unique, individual voice as a flutist.

LESSON STYLE

I find that watching my students grow and learn more about themselves and develop a passion for music is one of the best feelings in the world as a teacher! My goal for my students is to get them to a level of performance when they have the fundamentals and confidence to go out into the world and be a performing musician or teaching artist. Each student is unique, therefore each student's lessons will be structured differently and have different realistic, individualized goals. I find that it is imperative to acknowledge accomplishments so that student's have the desire to grow and progress. I do not believe in setting "practice times" as I find that can create very unhealthy practice habits physically and emotionally. Instead, I teach my students to listen to their body and their emotions as to when they want to practice - this will lead to them becoming confident musicians while also growing their love for music!
