In lessons with beginner and intermediate students, I utilize the Rubank method books. Once a student has mastered those, we move onto etude books. I assign scale exercises and repertoire to all of my students, and I like to introduce beginner music theory when appropriate. My students practice duets and sight-reading in lessons with me, and this combination of materials gives the student the most comprehensive learning experience. For my beginning students, I generally start with the book their school teacher wants them to use, or I have students use the Yamaha book 1. If the student begins in middle school or high school, I like to use the Rubank books. I believe that working on solo repertoire is an important part of learning and performing, so I begin my students on solo repertoire as soon as possible. I choose solo works that are in the ability of the student, yet offer enough of a challenge to help the student learn and grow. Read More

For elementary students and some middle schoolers, I usually either work out of Standard of Excellence or Essential Elements book 1 to begin their studies or continue where they left off. For high schoolers and more advanced middle schoolers, I like to have them play solo flute pieces that fit with their ability level.
