The method books for Younger students typically consists of 3 or more levels depending on their skill, while the method books for older students provide a good outline of the technique for the instrument. For younger students with no sight reading experience, I will typically start of with Ted Reed's book Syncopation. This book starts the student off with a very basic music notation vocabulary. This vocabulary is often quickly absorbed so that the student may proceed to more complicated musical words or phrases. As soon as I meet with a student or a group of students, I make sure they are welcomed by an energetic teacher before getting started on their lesson. I try to keep the student(s) engaged by showing them different ways and approaches to music from books and my own personal approaches to help them grow knowing their teacher is well experienced.
