Listen, listen, listen! Listening is the most important thing that a student can do to get better at the drums. By doing so the student will be able to imitate, assimilate and finally innovate, which is the goal. Listening to lots of records and copying what the drums are playing is critical! Not only will I do my best in teaching fundamentals, technique or more developed concepts on the drums but I will also provide skills necessary to be able to self-learn and practice efficiently so that the student can troubleshoot and not fully depend on a teacher. A class once or twice a week is beneficial I believe for keeping up the continuity of practice. We will work on first the guitar as an instrument, basic chords, chord structures, some basic scales, and over time making chord changes happen as the minds memory/muscle memory for remembering chords grows! I began teaching over the summer of 2010. While attending Berklee, I had countless one-on-one and small group sessions with fellow drummers where we would bounce ideas off one another and give each other "mini lessons," breaking down specific grooves and licks. In October, 2014, I led an hour-long master class for other Berklee percussion students about advanced polyrhythmic concepts and applications. My teaching experience dates back to my college days, as I began teaching private lessons part time 20 years ago, and have been consistently teaching high school band and percussion for the last 15 years. Encouraging regular practice on a consistent schedule is one of the key points I like to emphasize for younger students, as it tends to help the student progress and gain a passion for the instrument.
