I have found that showing instead of telling comes across really well in teaching. I like to break things down and make sure a student isn't wasting time trying to get something new. I make them set reasonable goals in the moment till they feel like they can walk away having something new under their belt. To me one of the most important parts of showing a student something new is explaining why they should learn it or why they should do an assignment and how they can apply these things to real musical situations. For very beginning and young students we will usually begin with just a book or two. We will work on the basics of how to drum (holding sticks, striking the drum, etc) as well as learning basic notation. Very early on I like to show everyone how to play something as simple as a rock groove, that is much easier than it sounds. Drumming is something that can sometimes be very hard to work at but it is always nice for a student to see that it is possible and with just that much work they have already achieved that! Depending on where the student is on their development, and which instrument: Guitar - I typically try and start with fundamentals such as how to hold your instrument.. where in the fret to press and make it sing and sound correct. I usually give them a couple simple, one or two string ditties to practice. Then I usually go over some of the basic, commonly used chords and have the student practice on making sure that they can hear all the correct strings ring when they strike the chord. Read More
