Goals are always tailored to individual student interests. I like to assign practice homework, which is a mix of technical exercises and song-based learning using student-preferred music. I love to watch students peel back the layers of the onion and discover how their favorite artists make music, from learning common chord progressions to transcribing solos note-for-note to imitating playing styles. As a drummer, I keep a smooth shuffle currently for 3 different rhythm blues bands who perform around New Orleans' Frenchmen Street and other top venues. I've also clocked studio sessions on bass, keys, violin, and viola. I use a few different method books including Hal Leonard's Essential Elements, Stick Control for the Snare Drummer, Modern Rudimental Swing Solos, Tommy Igoe's Groove Essentials among others. I also believe that all musicians, especially drummers should have a strong rhythmic foundation so I incorporate sight-reading, call and response, and ear training to build the young musicians' instincts.
